Overview

About Foundation Cigar Co.

Few names in the premium cigar world carry the same level of passion, expertise, and authenticity as Nicholas Melillo, founder and master blender of Foundation Cigar Company. Born and raised in Connecticut — home to some of the world's finest tobacco — Nicholas developed an early appreciation for the craft, eventually traveling to Nicaragua where he immersed himself in the rich traditions of cigar making. He spent years as the head of production and tobacco sourcing for one of the largest Nicaraguan cigar manufacturers, working directly with farmers, selecting leaf, and refining his approach to blending from the ground up. In 2015, he founded Foundation Cigar Company with a mission to merge old-world traditions with modern craftsmanship — not as a marketing philosophy, but as a literal description of how every blend is built: globally sourced leaf, Nicaraguan production discipline, and a blender's instinct honed over two decades in the fields and on the factory floor.

What sets Foundation apart is a portfolio organized around story and substance rather than brand extension. Each line is its own tobacco thesis — the Connecticut Broadleaf-wrapped Tabernacle, the Corojo-driven Wise Man, the Connecticut River Valley tribute of Charter Oak, the historically rooted Aksum and Highclere Castle collaborations — built with clear intent and rewarding careful smoking. Whether it's the award-winning El Güegüense, the deeply personal Tabernacle, or the tribute to his Connecticut roots in Charter Oak, each blend tells a story of dedication, heritage, and excellence. Production is largely centered in Estelí, Nicaragua — including work with Tabacalera AJ Fernández on select releases — with globally sourced components including Brazilian Mata Fina binders, Ecuadorian wrappers, and Connecticut River Valley broadleaf. The result is one of the most intellectually satisfying portfolios in boutique premium cigars today: handmade cigars that know exactly what they are and deliver on that promise every time.

Offered in Sumatra, Connecticut Shade and Broadleaf, Candela and other wrappers across multiple vitolas, the line is positioned at mild–medium strength officially, though larger sizes can read medium to medium‑full.
