About Punch

The name Punch dates to 1840 in Havana, where a German tobacco merchant named Don Manuel López created a brand named after the beloved European puppet character Mr. Punch — a fitting choice for a cigar that was always meant to be noticed. For over a century, Punch was one of Cuba's most celebrated heritage brands, a fixture in the humidors of serious smokers on both sides of the Atlantic. When the Cuban Revolution and the U.S. embargo closed that chapter, General Cigar Company stepped in to ensure the name survived — reestablishing Punch for the American market in Honduras in the mid-1960s under the guidance of Frank Llaneza, making it one of the very first premium cigar brands ever manufactured in that country. Where the Cuban original had been known for elegance and refinement, the Honduran interpretation leaned into something bolder: a fuller-bodied, more muscular expression of the Punch character, built on the rich, dark-soiled tobacco of the Jamastran Valley and the growing regions surrounding Danlí — a profile that quickly earned the brand a devoted following among American smokers who wanted strength and complexity in equal measure.

That Honduran identity has only deepened in the decades since. In 2003, the Punch Gran Puro — a blend made entirely from Honduran-grown tobacco — paid direct homage to the country that had given the brand its second life, earning widespread critical praise as one of the purest expressions of Honduran terroir available in the premium market. Two decades later, the 2023 Punch Golden Era pushed the heritage narrative even further, collaborating with the Eiroa family to incorporate rare, authentic Cuban-seed Corojo tobacco grown in the Jamastran Valley — connecting the brand's Central American present to its Cuban past in a single, celebrated blend. Today, produced at the STG Danlí factory under the General Cigar Company portfolio, Punch draws on tobaccos from Honduras, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador across a diverse lineup that spans nearly 185 years of cigar history — a brand that has reinvented itself more than once and come out swinging every time.
