The name San Cristobal carries centuries of history — San Cristóbal de la Habana being the original colonial name for Havana, Cuba, and a fitting tribute to the Cuban cigar tradition that inspired the brand's entire identity. Robert Levin of Ashton Distributors secured the U.S. trademark on that name quietly in the 1980s, then held it for nearly two decades, waiting for the right moment and — more importantly — the right blender. That moment arrived in 2006, when Levin partnered with José "Don Pepín" García, the Cuban-born Class 8 Master Roller whose work at El Rey de los Habanos in Miami had already set the boutique cigar world on fire. Together, they launched San Cristobal in 2007 as Ashton's first Nicaraguan premium cigar — a bold, full-bodied departure from the Dominican-made, Connecticut Shade elegance that had defined the Ashton portfolio for over two decades. The debut flagship, distinguished by its rich Nicaraguan Habano wrapper and the iconic Papagallo parrot band artwork, scored a 93 from Cigar Aficionado and announced immediately that this was something special.
Today, every San Cristobal cigar is hand-rolled at the My Father Cigars factory in Estelí, Nicaragua — the García family's state-of-the-art facility that has become one of the most respected production houses in the premium cigar world. The partnership between Levin and the Garcías has produced a portfolio that spans a remarkably wide stylistic range: the golden Ecuador Connecticut-wrapped Elegancia for the medium-bodied enthusiast, the Ecuador Sumatra-wrapped Revelation in the medium-to-full lane, the complex and deeply Nicaraguan Quintessence, and the limited-edition Ovation, wrapped in a dark and intense San Andrés Oscuro that pushes the brand into its boldest expression yet. From a trademark held in reserve for twenty years to one of the most consistently lauded Nicaraguan lines in the American market, San Cristobal is the story of patience, partnership, and a name that was always destined for something great.
