In 1888, 28-year-old merchant Jean Villiger founded a cigar factory in his own home in Pfeffikon, Switzerland — and when he passed away in 1902, his wife Louise took the helm and refused to let the dream die. It was Louise who made the brand's first great mark on history: in 1907, she launched the Villiger Kiel — the first cigar ever made with a goose-quill mouthpiece — a product so distinctive it became an enduring icon of European cigar culture. Louise's sons Hans and Max took over in 1918 and accelerated the company's international growth, expanding into Germany and building Villiger into a recognized name across Europe — all while keeping the company firmly in family hands. Over the following decades the company survived the disruptions of two world wars, rebuilt bombed factories, and kept growing: in 1976, Villiger became the first cigar manufacturer in history to sponsor a Formula One team, backing the Shadow Racing Team and putting the Villiger name in front of a global audience in a way no cigar brand had ever attempted before.
Today, Villiger is a fifth-generation family business with over 138 years of unbroken heritage — one of the longest continuous family-owned operations in the entire tobacco world. The company's reach is extraordinary: producing over 1.5 billion cigars annually across machine-made and premium hand-rolled formats, distributed across dozens of countries, and maintaining deep ties to Cuban tobacco through its exclusive Habanos distribution arms in Switzerland and Germany. In 2021, Villiger opened its own production facility in Nicaragua — the country's most modern cigar factory at the time of its launch — where around 150 trained specialists produce approximately 16 brands under the Villiger de Nicaragua banner, bringing Swiss precision to the volcanic soils of Estelí. From the iconic Kiel and the flagship 1888 Nicaragua to the Corrida and 1492, Villiger occupies a singular position in the premium cigar world: a Swiss house with a European soul, a global footprint, and the kind of multigenerational staying power that only a true family dynasty can sustain.
